Using Groundcovers in the Landscape
Use this chart to determine the number of groundcover “plugs” (small plants that make up a flat) you will need according to the area that you are trying to fill. Groundcover plants will creep and fill in no matter how far you space them, so the distance apart that you plant them depends entirely on how quickly you want your area to look full.
- Calculate the area of the space you wish to cover: (length in feet) x (width in feet) = area in square feet
- Decide how far apart you want your groundcover plugs.
- Use the spacing chart below to determine the number of plants you will need based on your area and the distance you choose between plants.
Note: 50 plants (plugs) = 1 flat
For example:
- An area that is 10 feet long and 15 feet wide (10 x 15) has an area of 150 square feet.
- You choose to plant your groundcover plugs 8” apart.
- According to the chart, you need 350 plants to cover 150 square feet at a distance of 8″ apart.
- One flat is about 50 plants, so you will need 7 flats.
